Project Euphémé: Call for Linguistic Tolerance
We call on civil society and policymakers to support the following principles:
In accordance with Article 6 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which encourages linguistic diversity while respecting the mother tongue at all levels of education, wherever possible, and promotes the learning of multilingualism from an early age.
Noting that the number of non-native speakers is increasing in our European societies.
Noting that these people are subject to linguistic discrimination, they are stigmatized because of their mother tongue(s), subjected to criticism, mockery, interference, or neglect simply because they do not speak the official language(s) of the country that hosts them.
We, the partners of the European project Euphémé, call on civil society and policymakers to:
- a. Show linguistic tolerance towards non-native speakers.
- b. Cease prohibiting the use of mother tongues within families.
- c. Cease prohibiting the use of mother tongues in public spaces, including schools.
- d. Refrain from criticizing people who speak languages other than the official language(s) of the country.
- e. Raise awareness of linguistic tolerance from an early age.
- f. Offer training for professionals in contact with people of foreign origin to help them manage linguistic diversity.
- g. Offer spaces and times for exchanges with people from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds to ensure dialogue and foster social peace.
